AIFC Court & IAC Traning Centre: An Introduction to Legal English

The AIFC Court and IAC Traning Centre (‘The Training Centre’), in cooperation with One School, are pleased to announce the upcoming Introduction to Legal English course, designed for legal professionals or law students with a background and interest in the legal field. This live, online 20-hour programme will be delivered by an experienced British language English speaking teacher based in the UK.

Throughout the course, learners will engage in practical exercises, including reading and drafting basic contracts, writing professional legal emails, and participating in negotiation simulations.

Course Aims:

Expand legal vocabulary: Acquire common legal and contractual terminology, understand ‘legalese,’ and use formal language appropriately
Improve reading comprehension: Develop strategies to read and interpret basic contracts, draft agreements, and legal correspondence
Enhance writing skills: Practice drafting clear, concise clauses and writing professional emails or memos in legal settings
Strengthen speaking & listening: Conduct effective discussions and negotiations in English, participate in client meetings, and handle Q&A sessions
Boost confidence: Gain the fluency and precision needed to communicate professionally in international legal environments

Course Outcomes:

  • Understand contract structure: Identify common contract sections and explain their functions in English
  • Use legal terminology: Employ key legal terms with accuracy and confidence.
  • Draft basic contract clauses: Write short, standard clauses in clear and concise English.
  • Compose professional legal emails: Write formal emails suited to legal correspondence.
  • Conduct negotiations in English: Engage in negotiation role-plays, propose and respond to offers, and conclude agreements.
  • Summarise legal texts: Read and paraphrase short legal documents (e.g. memos, case briefs).
  • Participate in legal discussions and meetings: Communicate confidently in group or one-on-one discussions and Q&A sessions on legal issues, and effectively participate in Q&A sessions.

Course Requirements:

  • Minimum English level: CEFR B1 (Intermediate) and above, or equivalent English language ability
  • Technical setup: A reliable internet connection to access live online sessions, and access to a computer, laptop, or tablet with audio and video capability (webcam, microphone)
  • Legal background: Basic knowledge of legal knowledge (recommended, not mandatory)
