Thomas Krümmel

IAC Chairman


Mr. Krümmel, born 1960, is a national of Germany, Rechtsanwalt and partner in the Berlin office of the law firm of MEYER-KÖRING.

Admitted to the Bar in 1992, he looks back on three decades of professional experience as legal advisor and party counsel in the German state courts. His clients are corporate developers, large bank and investors’ consortiums, construction enterprises, high net-worth individuals, family offices and other private clients from all major jurisdictions of the world. His portfolio comprises real estate-related transactions and development projects of any kind and volume as well as mandates in the pharmaceutical, aeronautics, advertising, car component supply, car retail and health food sectors.

In commercial arbitration, he has acted in cases involving, inter alia, real estate development, franchising, car retail and plant engineering under the ICC and the DIS as well as ad-hoc rules. Prior to his appointment as Chairman of the IAC, he was a member of the IAC panel of arbitrators.

He is a long-standing advisor to various United Nations agencies, international organizations, NGOs, foreign states, HQ British Forces Germany, the UK Ministry of Defence, the British and French embassies in Germany and other diplomatic missions from all five continents.

As speaker at conferences and author of numerous legal publications in German and English, predominantly in the fields of Conflict of Laws and EU and International Procedural law, he focuses on the resolution of conflicts between legal culture, legal language and the application of law in an international context.

He served as a board member of the German Bar Association (International Section) and the Berlin Bar Association. He chairs the Berlin Bar's Examination Committee for specialist lawyers in International Commercial law. He is an Honorary Member of the UK Commercial Bar - European Circuit.

He was educated at schools in Bonn, Germany and Lausanne, Switzerland. He is a law graduate of Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität of Bonn, Germany, and holds an LL.M. in European Community law degree (with distinction) from the University of Glamorgan (Wales). His training includes working as junior lawyer in the corporate legal department of Lufthansa German Airlines.

Prior to entering the legal profession, he was a radio speaker, journalist and junior editor at The Voice of Germany (Deutsche Welle), Deutschlandfunk and Westdeutscher Rundfunk. To this day, he occasionally appears in German radio plays.

His languages are German, English and French.

He was made a Chevalier dans l'Ordre national du mérite by the President of the French Republic in 2013.


Registrar & Chief Executive

Mr. Christopher Campbell-Holt

Registrar and Chief Executive, IAC


Mr. Campbell-Holt is the Registrar and Chief Executive of the IAC. He is responsible for the day to day management and administration of the IAC, case management of arbitrations and mediations before the IAC, and the appointment of mediators at the IAC as provided by the IAC Arbitration and Mediation Rules. He is also the Registrar and Chief Executive, and Enforcement Judge, of the AIFC Court.

He managed the establishment of the AIFC Court and IAC from initial concept to recognised stand-alone premier international dispute resolution institutions in Eurasia and has advised many Governments and organisations on common law and dispute resolution institutions development including in the Middle East, Central Asia, Eastern Europe and South America.

He is a member of the AIFC Legal Advisory Council, which reviews and approves AIFC law modelled on the common law. He was a member of the Working Group on Judicial and Legal Reforms of the Supreme Council of Reforms of the Office of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He is a member of the International Council of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan, which advises on reform of the Kazakh courts and dispute resolution. He is a member of the AIFC Legal Services Board, which regulates legal services provided by lawyers in the AIFC. He is an Honorary Professor and Member of the Board of Trustees at M. Narikbayev (KAZGUU) University in Astana, and Adjunct Professor and Member of the Advisory Board at Narxoz University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

He has 20 years of international legal experience gained while living and working in the UK, US, Middle East and Central Asia. He was the Registrar at an international financial centre commercial court and alternative dispute resolution centre in Qatar under the Presidency of Lord Woolf, the former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. He also worked at the international law firm Norton Rose Fulbright, in London, UK, and at a Middle East law firm partnered with the international law firm Covington and Burling LLP, in Doha, Qatar.

He studied Law at University College London, and is admitted to the Bar of New York State.  He is a CEDR accredited mediator and has many years of mediator experience. He has Member status at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He is a life time member of the Chartered Institute of Directors and he is a board member of various institutions including the Board of Governors of De Montfort University in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

He has received numerous honours in Kazakhstan including in 2022, The Order of Friendship (Dostyq ordeni) by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This is the highest level state award of the Republic of Kazakhstan that can be awarded to non-Kazakh citizens. It is awarded to individuals for the "promotion of international and civil consensus in society and the promotion of peace, friendship and cooperation between peoples".  In 2020 he was awarded “The Jubilee Medal” by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan for his “significant contribution to the formation of statehood, strengthening of sovereignty and socio-economic development of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.
